Horizontal and Directional Drilling vs. Conventional Drilling
Horizontal drilling involves drilling a lateral horizontally off of the vertical wellbore. Directional drilling is the controlled drilling of a wellbore to a prescribed bottom hole location. Both horizontal and directional drilling require the use of downhole mud motors (powered hydraulically by drilling fluid to allow for rotation of the drill bit with little or no rotation of the drill string) to alter the course of a wellbore to hit a specified drilling target. Horizontal and directional drilling operations require two distinct systems to steer the drill bit below the earth's surface to a predetermined target: a positive-displacement downhole mud motor and measurement while drilling ("MWD") technology.
Horizontal and Directional Drilling
When drilling a vertical well, the wellbore is drilled straight down until the oil or natural gas reservoir is reached. Vertical drilling is most efficient when reservoir pressure is high and the formation has high permeability. Conventional drilling is not always the most economic approach given factors such as restricted surface access, geology, reservoir pressure and present value considerations. Horizontal and directional drilling does not compete with or take the place of conventional vertical drilling rig operations. By virtue of the increased productivity and economics associated with horizontal and directional drilling techniques, conventional drill rig utilization levels are actually enhanced.
Benefits of Horizontal and Directional Drilling
Improved Access
The use of horizontal and directional drilling equipment allows for access to previously unattainable bottom hole targets.
Increased Economic Performance
Increased production is achieved through the increased exposure of the reserves to the producing wellbore, especially in reservoirs with low permeability and porosity.
Measurement While Drilling ("MWD") systems are installed in the drill string to provide real time measurements of basic trajectory parameters such as inclination, direction, tool-face and temperature. Additional sensors such as pressure, gamma-ray and resistivity may be added depending upon the specific application.
RTC's Electropulse WMD
The new ELECTROPULSE MWD System advances MWD technology by combining the best of RichTerra Directional’s existing MWD systems with new technologies that enhance performance and provide operators with additional options not found on standard systems. The ELECTROPULSE MWD System provides both electromagnetic ("EM") and positive pulse ("P+") telemetry option, as well as Logging while drilling ("LWD") capabilities including not only gamma ray, but also the latest in resistivity tool technology.
Electromagnetic Systems
The EM MWD tool is a wireless MWD System which utilizes low frequency current-loop signals to communicate data to the surface.
Mud Pulse Systems
Mud pulse tools operate by either opening or closing a valve in the tool that creates either a pressure surge (positive pulse) or drop (negative pulse). Mud pulse systems are a reliable transmission method.
Gamma
Gamma ray sensors measure the natural radioactive emissions from isotopes of potassium and the uranium and thorium series contained in, or absorbed into the mineral components of surface rocks.
Resistivity
The symmetrical, performance-enhancing design of the Resistivity system and the centrally located antennas provide real-time compensation eliminating invasion effects due to measurement delays, and improve accuracy through cancellation of variations in receiver channels. The Resistivity system is effective in all mud types and provides a range of transmission formats. High resolution data can be stored downhole, retrieved and processed as required.

Mud Motors
RichTerra Directional mud motors are maintained at our motor repair facilities in Calgary. We have instituted a comprehensive maintenance program which includes standardized job procedure manuals for the assembly and disassembly process.
RichTerra Directional is committed to providing the highest quality products available. Our service technicians use practical experience to assure this quality and are empowered to solve problems at every stage of the repair and maintenance cycle.
As part of our commitment to our customers, we only supply reliable and innovative equipment and mud motors. Our mud motors are specifically designed to accommodate the increased loads associated with newer higher performance power sections and has several advantages over previous generations of drilling mud motors, including:
Increased rate of penetration;
Upwards of double the torque capacity of conventional drilling motors;
Allows the customer to select more aggressive bits and drill with substantially higher weight of bit capacity;
Allows reduction in drill string rotary RPM thereby reducing wear on drillstring and casing;
Longer mud motor life due to rotor stator design;
Pressure balanced seal design;
If polycrystalline diamond compact "PDC" bits are to be run they depend on RPM to make hole, and performance mud motors are able to deliver the RPM to the bit;
Performance mud motors provide more effective control over deviation and doglegs;
Component tracking system.
Quality Control and Maintenance Program
RichTerra Directional’s downhole tools are maintained in Calgary, Alberta motor repair facilities. We have instituted a comprehensive maintenance program which includes standardized job procedure manuals for the assembly and disassembly process. As part of the comprehensive maintenance program, all tubular components are inspected for thread and fatigue damage, and magnetism. Each mud motor is then degaussed and placed on our dynamometer which additionally verifies the force and torque capabilities.
Our mud motor fleet is also monitored through our "Continuous Improvement Process which allows us to track individual components life history. This process provides us the ability to predict component life cycles and implement design modifications for continuous improvement and reliability.
